THE STORY BEHIND EXTRACTS
The paintings inside the paintings
For years, I’ve painted landscapes filled with hundreds of small marks, colours and textures. And often, while working on them, I find myself becoming attached to one tiny part of a painting. A meeting of two colours. A brushstroke I almost covered. A little corner that somehow holds its own feeling.
Sometimes those details get lost once the painting is finished. You step back and see the whole landscape, but I still remember what was happening inside it. Extracts started from the idea of looking closer. I began taking small fragments from my original paintings and separating them from everything around them. Without the rest of the landscape, something changed. A sea stopped being a sea. A mountain became a shape. A tiny section of sky became colour and movement.
They felt like new works, but still carried the memory of where they came from. So I gave them their own space.
Extracts are little paintings hidden inside bigger ones.
